The vikings used to cremate their dead and they would add the ash and crushed bones to the iron. The idea was to place the souls of their dead into the blades. Inadvertently by doing this they created carbon steel.
The viking sword part was already answered, they add bone ash on iron thinking it would gain its strength. Unknowingly, they already created crude form of steel.
