What a satisfying scene. It was so great to finally hear Walter come to terms with everything and admit to the woman he lied to for years that he was driven by his own greed and ambitions. It was like both him and us, the viewers, were being cleansed of the lies that he and us knew and carried throughout the show. This was a beautiful redemption scene, this will forever be my favorite drama, incredible show.
I know everyone is talking about Bryan Cranston, and rightfully so, but can we take a second to mention how fantastic Anna Gunn is in this scene. When Walter said he did it for himself you can SEE and FEEL that weight leave her. I know most people don't like Skyler, but you have to admit that Anna Gunn was phenomenal in the series.
For some reason I have always had respect for Walter throughout the show, and can very well understand when he says "I was alive". For most his life he had been an underachieving high school teacher. His work was stolen by his 'friends' who went on to become millionaires, an opportunity that he had missed out on. I think the pride he felt when his product was the best on the market was one of the reasons he further pursued the meth industry. The 'crystal blue' was 100% his product and no one could steal it (unlike what had happened previously with his friends). He was its owner and everyone loved it. He felt pride in himself like he had never felt before. Secondly, the money he was making was handsome! But I think the main reason he opted to stay in the industry (when he could have left earlier and avoided all the negative consequences), was the respect he was given by everyone. Heisenberg was a name that rung in everyone's heads. Everyone respected that name and didn't mess with him. He was being shown respect for the first time in his life, which I think he deserved. Although he was making more money than what was needed, I think it was more of a symbol to show everyone he was the boss rather than greed. To be a boss of such a colossal industry like that must've been a thrill he had never felt before. I think that he felt respected after a long long time. And for this reason I could feel Walters sadness that he wasn't able to share his happiness and pride with the woman he loved most and his children. He was sad that she could never see it from his point of view. Skyler didn't let him treat his kids (e.g. when he bought the car) and was pretty much dampening his joy and happiness when he was trying to share it with them to provide them better lives. I think Walter stopped caring about family (and started to enjoy the thrill of where he ended up for himself) when Skyler told him that she no longer loved him and was just waiting for him to die. I always think that he was a good man who was far too bright to be living such an average life and can completely understand his need to enjoy his life before he died.
This was one of the most powerful scenes of the entire series. I slightly teared up when he last touched Holly and was looking at Walter White Jr walk into the house...
This, for me, was the moment when Walter finally redeemed himself. After five seasons of lying incessantly, both to Skylar and to himself, he finally was able to admit out loud that he hadn't just been doing this for his family, but for himself-- that it was about his own greed, and the thrill he felt in being Heisenberg and having a drug empire. This simple confession is enough for us to know that Heisenberg is dead and Walter White is back.
I can't even watch basic cable programs anymore. Breaking bad spoiled me. If the writing, acting, production isn't up to breaking bad standards, then I can't even watch the show for 5 minutes. The only show I'm watching is Better call Saul.
